Do Glaciers Listen? - Local Knowledge, Colonial Encounters, and Social Imagination
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 3.88 $The glaciers creepLike snakes that watch their prey, from their far fountains,Slow rolling on.– Percy Shelley, “Mont Blanc,” 1816Glaciers in America’s far northwest figure prominently in indigenous oral traditions, early travelers’ journals, and the work of geophysical scientists. By following such stories across three centuries, this book explores local knowledge, colonial encounters, and environmental change.Do Glaciers Listen? examines conflicting depictions of glaciers to show how natural and social histories are entangled. During late stages of the Little Ice Age, significant geophysical changes coincided with dramatic social upheaval in the Saint Elias Mountains. European visitors brought conceptions of Nature as sublime, as spiritual, or as a resource for human progress. They saw glaciers as inanimate, subject to empirical investigation and measurement. Aboriginal responses were strikingly different. From their perspectives, glaciers were sentient, animate, and quick to respond to human behaviour. In each case, experiences and ideas surrounding glaciers were incorporated into interpretations of social relations.Focusing on these contrasting views, Julie Cruikshank demonstrates how local knowledge is produced, rather than “discovered,” through such encounters, and how oral histories conjoin social and biophysical processes. She traces how divergent views continue to weave through contemporary debates about protected areas, parks and the new World Heritage site that encompasses the area where Alaska, British Columbia, and the Yukon Territory now meet. Students and scholars of Native studies and anthropology as well as readers interested in northern studies and colonial encounters will find Do Glaciers Listen? a fascinating read and a rich addition to circumpolar literature.Winner of the Victor Turner Prize for Ethnographic Writing, 2006

The Fountain & the Furnace: The Way of Tears and Fire
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 24.92 $Maggie Ross is the pseudonym of an Anglican hermit whose previous book, 'The Fire of Your Life', was hailed for its sensitivity, wisdom, and robust humor. In her latest work, she explores the significance and effect of tears in the spiritual life. She combines a knowledge of the Christian mystical writers with a finely-tuned sense of life in the contemporary world. Authors Note: The birth of any book is something of a mystery, and this one is no exception. My original intention was to write a small study of tears as a long-neglected aspect of 'spiritual life', and the role they have played, consciously or unconsciously, in the life of one person. It appears that tears may be one key to understanding the unity of the bio-psycho-spiritual person; and more: a key to understanding the mutual 'kenosis' of the relationship between God and creation; a key as crucial to understanding what a person is as created in the redeeming love of God as is the double helix in understanding the genetic code. I realize now, at the end of writing this book, that I have undertaken a survey of spiritual theology in which the idea of 'kenosis' is absolutely central, and in which tears play the crucial role. What do I mean by 'kenosis'? The 'mind' of God, the 'mind' of Christ is self-emptying, that is God willingly limits God's power in order to become engaged in life on earth. And more: God is willing to limit God's power to undergo the ultimate in powerlessness so that the power and glory of God can enter the world. To effect this, Jesus gives up security, status, dominance, reputation. This is only a beginning of the description of this concept.
